CHEESE ON CHANUKAH
Another reason for the custom of eating milk products on
Chanukah is that the Hebrew word for cheese,
חלב, (Cholov)
hints to the three things that the Yevanim, Syrian-Greeks
wanted to absolve from the Children of Israel, the obsevance
of the New Month, circumcision and the Shabbos. The Greeks
hoped to conquer the Jews and take over Jerusalem by
enacting decrees against theses three basic mitzvos.
The three letters of
חלב are represented
in the three mitzvos:
The letter
ח' of
חדש – New Month is the
same as the first letter of חלב
The letter
ל' in the word
מילה is represented by
the second letter of
חלב
The letter
ב' in the word
שבת is the same as the
last letter of
חלב
