We read in this past week’s Torah Potion about Abraham’s visitation by angels. Immediately after the visit, the angels headed to fulfill their mission to destroy the depraved cities of the Sodom-Amorah regions as the verse states, “The men stood up from where they were, and they gazed upon Sedom. Avraham went with them to send them [on their way].” Wherever the term {Hebrew Ref} is used in Scripture it is [meant to convey gazing for the purpose of bringing] evil, [As here, where they gazed upon Sedom for the purpose of bringing about its destruction. ] except: "Gaze down from Your holy abode," (Devarim 26, 15, dealing with the tithe given to the poor, and the verse there ends "And bless Your people.") [to teach] that giving to the poor is so great that it can change G-d`s attribute of anger to mercy. Rashi is teaching us the great virtue of tzedakah-charity. Not only do acts of charity nullify dreadful heavenly decrees but moreover, charity overturns the decree and transforms it to heavenly compassion. The very same awful decree becomes a source of protective merit if someone gives charity with a sincere heart. In these difficult times where there are so many challenges, we must take advantage of this propitious potential. Supporting Torah study and Torah causes are most auspicious, for that is what the will of H-shem desires. At this time of the year, Tehilim Hotline in conjunction with Yeshiva Derech Chaim holds it annual charity auction. This year’s event, “Illuminating the World with Joy” features over 140 exciting prizes and many free gift offers. Check it out.and experience “Illuminating the World with Joy”.
